Choosing the Right Glass for Your HDB Windows: A Complete Guide
Upgrading or replacing your HDB windows isn’t just about aesthetics – it’s about safety, comfort, and compliance. With Singapore’s stringent building regulations and tropical climate, selecting the right glass type is crucial. As AM Glass Solution SG, we’ve installed thousands of windows in HDBs across Bedok, Tampines, Ang Mo Kio and beyond, and we’re sharing this comprehensive guide to help you make an informed decision.
Understanding HDB Window Regulations
Before diving into glass types, it’s essential to understand that HDB has strict rules for window replacements:
All glass panels must be laminated safety glass for windows above a certain height (typically third storey and above).
Windows must be installed by a trained professional, not a DIY job.
The window frame must remain intact or be replaced with an approved design if it’s beyond repair.
Any alteration that affects the façade may require approval from HDB or the Town Council.
Our team is well‑versed in these requirements and ensures every installation meets or exceeds the current codes.
Types of Glass for HDB Windows
Glass Type | Safety | Sound Insulation | UV Block | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Tempered Glass | High – breaks into small cubes | Low | Low | Low‑rise internal partitions, shower screens (not for high‑rise windows) |
Laminated Glass | Excellent – stays intact when cracked | High | 99% UV block | High‑rise HDB windows, balconies, skylights |
Low‑E Coated Glass | Depends on core (usually laminated) | Medium | High | East/west‑facing rooms to reduce heat |
Acoustic Laminated Glass | Excellent | Very High | 99% UV block | Units near expressways or MRT tracks |
Tinted Glass | Same as base glass | Same as base | Reduces glare | Homes with strong sun exposure |
For HDB compliance, laminated glass is the go‑to choice. It consists of two glass sheets bonded with a PVB interlayer that holds fragments in place even when broken. This prevents dangerous falling glass – a critical requirement in high‑rise living.
Benefits of Upgrading to Laminated Safety Glass
Uncompromised safety – Even if a football or object hits the window, the glass cracks but remains in its frame.
Noise reduction – The PVB interlayer dampens sound vibrations, noticeably reducing traffic and neighbourhood noise.
UV protection – Blocks 99% of harmful ultraviolet rays, protecting your skin and preventing furniture from fading.
Better energy efficiency – Combined with a Low‑E coating, laminated glass can keep your flat cooler.
Increased security – It resists forced entry, acting as a deterrent to burglars.
Signs It’s Time to Replace Your HDB Windows
Don’t wait for a sudden breakage. Look out for these warning signs:
Fogging between double‑glazed panes – Seal failure allows moisture in.
Cracked or chipped glass – Even a small crack can spread rapidly due to temperature changes.
Difficulty opening or closing – Warped frames put stress on the glass.
Drafts or water leaks – Worn‑out rubber seals compromise insulation.
Outdated single‑pane glass – Upgrade to laminated glass for safety and noise reduction.
